Evolution of sound

Leonardo Da Vinci discovers that sound travels in waves. Over a hundred years later, Martin Mersennewas was the first to measure the speed of sound in air.

Italian inventor, Guglielmo Marconi, sent and received his first radio signal in Italy in 1895. By 1901 he had successfully sent the first radio transmission across the Atlantic Ocean, the Morse-code letter "S".

Did you know that headphones orginated from the earpiece on a telephone receiver? Before amps were developed, they were the only way to listen to electrical audio signals. Nathaniel Baldwin developed the first successful pair in his kitchen in 1910 and later sold them to the United States Navy.

Station 8MK in Detroit, Michigan was the first known radio news program to broadcast.

Prior to the audio cassette, reel-to-reel was used to record audio media. It was expensive and required training to use. The cassette tape, also called the Compact Cassette, allowed people to record audio with limited training.

Created by a consortium that included Learjet Corporation, Ampex, Ford, General Motors, Motorola, and RCA -- the 8-Track aka Stereo 8 is a magnetic tape cartridge for music.

Dolby Laboratories introduced Dolby Stereo, an optical four-channel sound technology.
